Background and approach:
A
PlanItAction workshop is a
process for developing visual models of
business problems and their solutions.
The primary visual planning tools used in the
full day
workshop are the Affinity process and the
SeeMap process.
The Affinity process
has it's roots in post-World War II operations research as well as Total Quality
tools developed from 1972 through 1979. It is an extremely powerful technique
for organizing group discussion and rapidly driving comprehensive analysis to
actionable decisions. It is particularly effective when it is necessary for the
group to identify critical success factors from a large number of ideas,
opinions and issues. In addition, it allows the group to identify cause and
effect relationships, map out in increasing detail the full range of options
that need to be considered, prioritize issues based on known weighted criteria
and identify likely events and contingencies that will
determine success.
The
SeeMap process focuses on modeling both the current and desired future state of a
business. The actions, accomplishments, or decisions that must occur to
reach the goal are clearly identified. SeeMap brings clarity into complex
situations and identifies the flow, and obstacles in the flow, of vital
physical and information assets. SeeMap has been
successfully used to model solutions in a diverse set of business
environments and industries including: supply chain management, financial
services, manufacturing, customer service and support organizations,
medical, pharmaceutical, entertainment industry and the
Defense Department. Its scope can be applied to work groups, departments,
divisions or entire corporations.
The result of the
SeeMap process is a lucid perspective and shared visualization of
the elements and requirements that will lead to a business solution.
A typical
SeeMap team consists
of 3 to 5 individuals who have relevant knowledge, are motivated to find a
solution, and have the responsibility to design and implement that
solution.
